                            The 20 Things 86 Veterans must do while in SA and at the Victor Harbor Reunion

 

 

1..........Ride the Horse Drawn Tram across the causeway from Victor Harbor to Granite Island. The nostalgic reminder of the olden days of this popular seaside town, the original service began in 1894. You can walk or ride but while you are there see the penguin feeding or have a coffee in the Bistro.

 

2..........Try Coopers Pale or Sparkling Ale. The pride of SA and the largest Australian owned Brewery. The greatest beer in Australia, hands down. Drink the green one for refreshment or the red to get out of control.

 

3..........Visit the SA Whale Centre, Railway Tce Victor Harbor. The Whale Centre and Marine facility has three levels of interactive displays. Meet the whales, sharks, mammals and fish who call SA unique coastline home. The Whale watching season starts in late April and runs up to October.

 

4..........Try Coorong Mullet, and River Murray Cockles. These seafood delights are only found in this region.. The intensely flavoured firm fleshed fish is found only in the Coorong, and the cockles are harvested at the River Murray mouth.

 

5..........Ride the Steam Ranger Cockle Train. This heritage railway travels along the coastline giving magnificent coastal scenery. This will be part of our reunion trip.

 

6..........Drink Farmers Union Iced Coffee. Launched in 1977, this flavoured milk has cult status. Hands down the greatest iced coffee on earth. Can be used as a hangover cure or to line the stomach before a days drinking or both.

 

7..........Visit the Murray Mouth and Port Goolwa Wharf Precinct. Ever wondered where the mighty River Murray ends? After snaking 2530 Km from the Snowy Mountains it enters the Southern Ocean via Lake Alexandrina between sand dunes just outside the historic river Port town of Goolwa. In 1824 it was Capt Charles Sturt who named the noble waterway the River Murray. Once a thriving River Port with Paddle steamers plying the waterway, Goolwa has retained much of it maritime feel. We visit this area on our reunion trip.

 

8..........Try Golden North Ice Cream. Made at Laura in the mid north of SA for 90 years with fresh milk and cream. This award winning delicacy is the best in the world, you must try it made with blue gum honey, it will win hands down.

 

9..........Walking Pub crawl. While the girls are shopping the boys can visit The Victor, Crown, Grovenor Hotels and the RSL Club all within walking distance in the town centre. Then meet the girls seaside at the Anchorage Wine Bar for wine or coffee.

 

10.........Kangaroo Island Visit. The Ferry service to Kangaroo Island is only a 30 min drive from Victor Harbor. This is a must see destination. Day tours and Holiday packages are all available from the Victor Harbor Information Centre, staff will be available to talk to you at our Meet and Greet Dinner.

 

11.........Victor Harbor Golf Club.  Golfers must tee off from the famous 1st tee, which is elevated with panoramic views of Encounter Bay. The view is worth a visit for non golfers and the beer is cold in the club house.

 

12.........Fried Fritz and Eggs at the Turtle Tavern. Famous SA Fritz lightly grilled on toast with eggs is something you interstaters have missed all your life. The Turtle Tavern will be erected beachside with breakfast available for 86 members at a small cost.

 

13.........Horseshoe Bay Port Elliot. Visit the Strand in Port Elliott for shopping and lunch at the internationally acclaimed Flying Fish restaurant overlooking Horseshoe Bay.

 

14.........Coffin Bay Oysters. Brilliant bi-valves from the pure waters of the western side of the southern tip of Eyre Peninsula, Hands down the best oysters in Australia.

 

15.........Steam Exchange Brewery. Located on the Goolwa Wharf you must try their excellent beer or the in-house distilled whiskey.

 

16.........Morning Coffee with the Fairy Fudge at the Turtle Tavern. In the beachside marquee we will have available to the 86 ladies morning coffee and cakes.

 

17.........Spirit of the Coorong Cruises. For those who wish to see the river and barrage system up close, there are 4 and 6 hour cruises available. Book through the Victor Harbor info centre.

 

18.........Ballast Stone Windjammer Shiraz. This treasure should be reserved for South Aussies only, but due to our kind nature we are recommending it to fellow 86 members. Available for tasting on our reunion trip at the Goolwa Wharf or at cellar door Currency Creek.

 

19.........Grovenor Hotel. Centrally located in Victor Harbor we have dined there and recommend their meals.

 

20.........Try Southwark Stout. Drink it as cold as you like because it’s a huge 7.4% alcohol, with a taste of tar and an old miners boots. There is chocolate, tobacco, mocha and cigarette butts in this conglomeration of roasted barley and greatness. Only $20 a six pack at BWS.
